Adolescence is described as the transitional period between childhood and adulthood, that typically occurs between the ages of 13-19. Believe it or not, adolescents have difficulties and problems just like adults. This should be common sense, but honestly there are people who don't understand this concept. Adolescence can actually be a difficult period in a young person's life as their hormones are raging out of control and they are trying to figure out who they are and how they fit into this world. All of this is compounded with them trying to balance the rigors and expectations of life. With the advent of social media, the need to be accepted, challenges of peer pressure, and the issue of bullying; navigating successfully through this phase of life has become much more difficult than in previous generations. As a school counselor, I have developed a unique ability to connect with kids and reach them at their level. Building rapport which can be challenging, especially with kids who are reticent about letting a stranger in their lives is the most important aspect in the counseling process. If you have a child who is struggling to find themselves, I can help them find their way. Although adolescence begins at 13, I am open and willing to work with kids as young 10 years old.
